We will work with your accounting and legal professionals to help achieve your business objectives, as well as provide direction to business owner(s) to bring the appropriate expertise to areas of need. Over the years, while growing our client’s assets and watching their businesses grow, we have assisted many of our business clients with counseling during their growth phase. More recently, however, as business owners look towards retirement, we have begun to assist them in developing exit strategies.
Anticipating a business owner’s retirement, we begin to redirect the focus of our questioning as follows: When will the business owner retire, who is his/her successor, how solid is the company’s balance sheet, its bookkeeping and its customer base; will the owner be involved during the transition period; and whether the business will be passed on to family members or be sold outright.
Similar to the assessment we offer to our individual clients, we look to generate a financial analysis of the business owner’s current financial situation which details their personal information and reflects the specifics that denote the type of lifestyle he/she expects in retirement. We work with the business owner’s accountants and lawyers in the valuation process and evaluate the business value factors, including its strengths and weaknesses.
From this information we set a strategy to:
- Develop a management transition;
- Have a succession plan in place;
- Arrange to clean the physical plant (as appearance is an important factor):
- Purge potential red flags, such as family members holding nebulous position
within the Company; - Audit financial statements;
- Validate and legitimate growth plan for the business;
- Develop strategies for client/customer retention and key employee retention;
- Defuse any family issues that may create biased or problematic flare-ups.
